What Happens at our Pointing Dog Field Tests?
There are five categories that each dog can be entered in: Field Dog Junior, Field Dog, Field Dog Advanced, Field Dog Excellent and Field Dog Excellent CH. The categories are set by the Canadian Kennel Club which sanctions our test. Each level is increasingly difficult and has to be passed three times to be awarded a title by the CKC.
The dogs don’t compete against one another, rather they are evaluated by a CKC-approved judge who walks with the dog and handler throughout the course. Depending on the category entered each dog is evaluated by the judge on its desire to hunt, style of running and pace, range, pattern, control, pointing and reaction to shot. At the senior levels the dogs might run in pairs and the requirements might include retrieving on land or water and backing another dog.
Birds (we generally use chukar) are ‘planted’ in the bird field
so each dog can find one or two on each run.
Spectators are always welcome.
We hope that you will find our tests fun. We have a great group of people and dogs who attend.
