the Brittany spaniel
Brittanys are strong, quick and agile dogs that require lots of exercise and activity to occupy their bodies and minds. They are happy and alert with a willing attitude and they are generally easy to train. Natural pointers and excellent retrievers, these dogs make great hunting companions.
Most Brittanys have a friendly temperament and they love people
and get along well with other dogs.
For families with an active lifestyle, owning the friendly, intelligent, empathetic,
athletic and versatile Brittany can be rewarding.
Before deciding if a Brittany is right for you please do your research.
You can talk to reputable breeders or contact us.
- Get to Know the Breed: Brittanys were bred for upland game hunting and while each Brittany will have its own unique personality, they all have similarities. Think about your lifestyle and if you are able to support the needs of a dog with a high energy level and prey drive. Review the breed standard which indicates the expected characteristics and physical size of Brittanys.
- Talk to Those Who Know Brittanys: Talk with people who have Brittanys to get an understanding of the breed's temperament, characteristics and how they are likely to respond in various situations.

Follow social media sites of Brittany clubs and fanciers. Confirm that the breeder you choose will register the puppy under your name and that you will receive the ownership papers.
- Compare Breeders: Check out various breeders and ask for references. Get to know the breeder and their reputation. If you can, visit their home or kennel. Check with the Canadian Kennel Club to ensure that the breeder is a member in good standing and that there have been no disciplinary actions against them.
- Observe. Visit the puppies/dogs you are interested in to be sure that they are being raised in a clean and loving environment. Observe their behaviour, temperament, and how they react to the breeder and meeting strangers. Read up on and understand needs of a young puppy and the training that will be required.
- Meet the Puppies’ Parents. This will give you the best idea of the puppy’s temperament and appearance when fully grown. A dam or sire may be from another breeder or owner. Find out about them too.
- Confirm Medical History. It is important to know of any underlying health conditions that may impact your Brittany. Ask for proof of health screening for such conditions as hip dysplasia.
- Understand the Costs: Beyond the initial purchase of a puppy or dog there are ongoing costs for food and shelter, medical checkups and health care. Be sure to research the costs of ownership that will last for the life of your pet.
- Consider a Rescue. Rescuing a Brittany from a reputable rescue organization that is run by those with extensive knowledge of the breed. This will ensure that the dog or puppy you are interested in has been vetted and that their medical conditions and characteristics are known. If you are interested in rescuing a Brittany, contact NBRAN, the National Brittany Rescue and Adoption Network. They have an Ontario Coordinator.
- Take Your Time: Remember that sometimes it is best to wait to be sure that you are getting a puppy or dog that is healthy, meets the breed standard, and is from a reputable breeder, to ensure that you get a puppy or dog that will fit with your home and your lifestyle. They will be part of your family for many years so be sure to do your homework and take your time.
